On a warm, heavy evening in late spring, Superintendent John Lambert is spending the end of a tedious day in his garden when the phone rings. James Shepherd, the Chairman of his golf club, urgently wants to meet.
Lambert arrives at dusk to find the clubhouse as quiet as the grave. And in the Committee Shepherd, lying spreadeagled on the floor. His jacket is open, and in the centre of his white shirt, the handle of a heavy knife protrudes from a patch of still-fresh blood.
